Pruning

Pruning the roses is done once a year in the winter, just after the period when the big frosts occur.
In Southern Greece you can start pruning in late January; in Northern continental Greece start later after the 15th of February. In more cold regions and on higher altitude, pruning is applied in March, just before the new vegetation starts.

Pruning could be very simple by following the instructions below.
1.Roses with a bushy shape, see figure 1: (English Roses, Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, Roses for hedges etc).
·
Take off dead, weak and deformed branches.
·By removing old branches (more than 3 years old) from the base you will help roses to renew their healthy and strong vegetation.
·Cut down roses by 2/3
2.Small Roses:
Just cut down to 10-15 cm using scissors for hedges.
3.Roses for cover ground:
Simply cut them down by 2/3, pruning could be done every 2-3 years.
4.Roses for hedges:
The first year cut them down by 2/3. The second year you could leave strong branches of 1 to 1,50 m depending on the desired height and the form of the hedge.

5.Standard Roses, see figure 2:
Cut their budded part down as for the bushy roses.

6.Climbers, see figure 3:
Remove dead and old branches. Reduce last year flowering shoots by 10 – 15 cm. Bend big shoots to flower more.

Summer pruning:

It is advisable to remove died flowers not only for esthetical reasons but to enhance new flowering more rapidly
